This lesson is an important preface to verbs. To grasp verbs, we must first comprehend gender and subject pronouns. Understanding gender and subject pronouns is a start to proficiency. Spanish deals with gender in several aspects. Nouns have gender as in ‘gato’ and ‘gata’. Adjectives accommodate gender as in ‘el gato rojo, la gata roja’. In Spanish the ‘a’ ending normal identifies the feminine, and the ‘o’ normally indentifies the masculine – there are exceptions. Some subject pronouns identify gender and some do not.
